What is a triathlon?
A triathlon is an athletic event that includes swimming, biking and running various distances. Depending on your age, you will go a specific distance on race day.
When is the triathlon?
Visit Our Triathlon page for current information on this year’s event.
Can I just participate in the final triathlon?
IHJ is a triathlon program designed to empower girls. Each athlete is expected to be at the weekly practice sessions to participate in the final triathlon. An athlete must attend all practices.
How old do I have to be to participate?
The program is open to girls 8-14 years of age.
Where can I register?
You can register on the Our Triathlon page. There you will find a button to register.
When and where are practices and the triathlon?
Please check out the Our Triathlon page of the website for all the key dates, times and location of the practices and race.
What if I cannot make a practice?
We understand everyone has a busy summer schedule and may not be able to attend every practice each week, however we encourage each girl to attend all practice sessions to participate in the IHJ triathlon. If you cannot attend a weekly practice session, we appreciate you letting your group leader know at the practice before and emailing IHJ at email@example.com.
What do I do during practices?
Practices are different each week. You can expect to learn how to successfully complete a modified triathlon during the practice sessions. You will be swimming and running or biking and running while making new friends and having lots of fun each week! See the Thursday Practice tab for details of each week’s practice.
What if I can’t swim or ride a bike?
IHJ strives to make this event accessible and achievable for all, so IHJ instructors will teach you how to swim and/or ride a bike!
What if I don’t have goggles, a helmet or other equipment needed to complete the triathlon?
IHJ will provide the equipment necessary to complete a triathlon to those who do not have access to this equipment. Through our generous community, sponsors and donors, we have the ability to provide goggles, caps, swim suits, bikes, helmets and running shoes to any girl who needs them. Just let us know during registration what you need. If you forgot to indicate equipment needs on your registration, please talk to a board member or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
What if I have a physical or intellectual disability?
Please contact us at email@example.com to discuss how we can accommodate the needs of each person and ensure participation.
What safety practices does IHJ have?
All practices are lead by a USAT Certified Coach. Athletic trainers will be onsite for all practices and the race to treat minor injuries or recommend seeking further medical attention. EMS will be onsite during the triathlon event.
Mutliple board members will be at each IHJ activity and all board members have completed CPR and First Aid training and have been SafeSport certified.
Is Ironhawk Juniors a 501(c)(3)?
Yes, we are a 501(c)(3).
How old do I need to be to volunteer?
To volunteer for IHJ, you must be at least 15 years of age.
What will I be doing as a volunteer? (…I’m not a triathlete, can I volunteer?)
You do not need to be a triathlete or know anything about triathlons to be a volunteer. If you have minimal to little knowledge of triathlons, we will pair you with a more knowledgeable volunteer. Our volunteers’ #1 responsibility is the safety of each girl. Every week, volunteer coordinators will share a lesson plan of activities and a timeline to follow for the duration of the practice. A volunteer will also be asked to encourage the girls to succeed in a way that is best for them so everyone has a rewarding experience.
How can I help Ironhawk Juniors?
We LOVE adding to our growing list of supporters and there are a multitude of way to support IHJ. You can be an individual donor, be a business sponsor or volunteer. As an organization, we depend on our generous Omaha-Council Bluffs Community. Please see the Get Involved or Donate tabs for specifics on how you can support us. Board members are also happy to help determine what is best for you.
